Why Its Needed
29,000 children under the age of five – 21 each minute – die every day, mainly from preventable causes. (Source UNICEF)
Malnutrition has been responsible, directly or indirectly, for 60% of the 10.9 million deaths annually among children under five. Well over two-thirds of these deaths, which are often associated with inappropriate feeding practices, occur during the first year of life. (Source WHO 2003)
One of the United Nations’ Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) number 4, is to reduce Child Mortality by 2/3rd by 2015. (http://www.mdgmonitor.org/goal4.cfm) This would only be possible if infant mortality and newborn mortality is reduced especially in countries where there is highest burden.
